Peter Huijgens
Peter C. Huijgens was born March 4th, 1949 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He started studying medicine in September 1967 at the Free University (Vrije Universiteit) in Amsterdam, and after getting his MD, was trained in hematology/internal medicine. As of 1976, he worked at the department of hematology of the University Hospital of the Vrije Universiteit (now Amsterdam UMC), starting as fellow/PhD student and ending as full professor and head of department in 2013. In that period, he was chairman of the Cancer Center Amsterdam and of the Dutch-Belgian study group for hematologic diseases in adults (HOVON). After retirement he was appointed as director of the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Institute (IKNL). In that period, he initiated the national Cooperation for Palliative Care (PZNL). Currently he acts as advisor of the board of IKNL. In 2020 he was invited to be vice-chair of the Dutch Society for PsychoOncology (NVPO).
