Adela Popa is an Associate Professor of Medical Sociology in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Romania. Her research interests are related to health policy, the impact of chronic illnesses, including cancer, on work and employment and chronic disease-related disability. She conducted several funded projects on work (re)integration following cancer and other chronic diseases in Romania, where this topic has only recently begun to be studied. Some of the themes studied in these projects were sickness absence and return to work policies, the impact of disability on work and employment, barriers and facilitators for return to work or continuing to work after a diagnosis of chronic illness, and stakeholders’ involvement in the return to work process, with a particular interest on the role of employers and trade unions. She wrote the country report for Romania in the context of the ECE Thematic Review on ‘Incentivising employment of persons with disabilities in the open labour market’.
